FAREWELL TO THE BLOG

This is very likely the last entry I will write for this blog. I have enjoyed it and I hope you have also. It is with regret that I see it draw to a close.

The reason is that I have less and less time and energy to do it justice.

Some time ago I learned my 22-yr-old grandson (who for 3 years has lived as a homeless person on the streets of a large city on the West Coast) had become a heroin addict and in his own words had "hit bottom." His emails from a library computer expressed a desperate desire to get his life straightened out and find his place in the world.

My wife and I helped him get to Florida and took him in to our home to live.

I'm happy to report that for 2 months he has been drug free and rebuilding his health. I was greatly relieved when his medical tests for STDs and HIV came back negative.

I have to drive him everywhere he needs to go for odd jobs, etc., and this is very tme consuming and energy draining for me.

All of which goes to say that I no longer can devote time to maintain this blog.

Naturally, however, I will always welcome your emails at any time, on any subject. I will answer you.

Making free international phone calls through the Internet is even more fun than we hoped. We were talking to a new contact in India through the free phone service called Skype when she suggested we talk to another Skype user she called "Peter of England."

Peter of England turned out to be a retired printer in North Yorkshire, and while we were taling to him, he brought in Norm, who was taking it easy at home in the kiwi-growing center of New Zealand. We all chatted together in a conference call that was entirely free, because we all had downloaded the free Skype software from Skype.com. Norm of New Zealand, who is 85, said he prefers using Skype to a regular phone because he can turn the volume up as much as he likes.

We spoke through our computer using a Web cam; you can use video only for one-on-one conversations. Web cams turn out to be fairly cheap, and we bought ours for around $30. All of the conversation and the video came through very clearly with none of the static or breaks we used to associate with Internet calls a couple years ago.

We accepted an invitation to join a virtual meeting of a group of Rotarians with 18 members; 10 in London, three in the United States, and one each in France, Switzerland, Portugal, Malaysia and Germany. On that day, they were visiting with another virtual Rotarian group in Iceland. The Skype screen display showed us who was talking and who was present at this conference call. If we wanted to, we could have clicked a button on the Skype screen and recorded everything. The whole thing was a kick and an international adventure. And it was all free.

The meeting in Iceland was a private conference, but there are plenty of public conferences going on all the time. These are listed in a column of "live" links on the Skype screen. The links also show what language is being used, and you can join in if you want. To create a Skypecast of your own, go to Skypecasts.Skype.com. If someone is obnoxious or turns out to be simply troublesome the originator of the conference can click a button to mute him.

Skype allows you to add all the participants in any conference to your contacts list. For that matter, the software can comb through your Outlook or Outlook Express mail and compile a list of those names who also have Skype. You can then make a free Skype call to any of them just by clicking on their name from within the software. Works with Windows, Mac or Linux.

(Richard now speaking: This is similar to an earlier post of mine about Jajah.com but Skype seems to be better. Both require a broadband/direct connection to the internet. Both are a wonderful way for Esperantists around the world to telephone each other free via the computer. I am not sure, however, that Esperantists really want to take advantage of this. Otherwise, why don't we do it?

Here is a question to start a conversation with the aim or recruiting or to initiate a discussion about Esperanto during any conversation.

Ask "Have you ever heard of Espeanto?" (Naturally you appear friendly.)

Now, for two serious points: Wait silently until he responds and maintain direct eye contact with him. Say nothing until he answers. It is sometimes very difficult to stay quiet before another person answers but it is very important.

The person you are talking with has two possible responses: "Yes, I've heard of Esperanto," or "No, I have never heard of Esperanto."

If he answers that he already knows something, you of couse say, "How did you come to know of it? I'm interested a lot in that."

"If he answers that he never even heard of Esperanto, here is your response: "What a pity!

Do not say another word! Make him say the next word. He will answer, "Why a pity?"

Then you are able to explain the advantageous reasons for learning Esperanto.

Mi partoprenis surrete diskutadon pri junaj esperantisto heiraũ. Unu tajpanto, kiu estas de la urbo Madrid, deklaris, ke tamen estas pli junuloj en la esperanta movado, estas malpli junuloj kiuj partoprentas en lokaj kluboj. (Li ne donis citaĵon de tio. Mi nur devis esti kredanta de liaj vortoj.) Li kredas, ke la TTT ebligis tiun aferon. Pasinte, homoj devis aniĝi lokajn klubon por partopreni la Esperantan movadon. Eble mi tro "raŭmismas" nun, sed Esperantistoj en la reto ja antaŭenigis la komunumo dum la pasintaj jaroj, eble ne al la fina venko, sed certe al la plifortiĝo de la movado. Dum tempo, kiam aliaj mondlingvoj faliĝas kaj klenas sin al la angla lingvo, Esperanto vivas kaj fakte pli kunigas siajn gefilojn.
Lokaj grupoj nun estas ĉefe idoj de ret-agado, kaj ne la malo. Oni lernas per la reto, oni ekzercas sin per la reto, oni trovas novajn amikojn per la reto, kaj oni organizas lokajn grupojn, ofte, per la reto. Sen lokaj grupoj, Esperanto restos nur hobia-lingvo, kiel Klingon, sed lokaj grupoj ne abundas en nia lando, kaj neniam faros tion sen aktiva ret-agado.
Mi ne komprenas, kial kelkaj homoj konfuziĝas pri la unueco de la "unua vivo" kaj la "dua vivo" de la ret-loĝanto. Ĉu iu, kiu skribas leterojn, aŭ kiu parolas tra muro al amiko en alia ĉambro, ne vere komunikas? Kun Skajpo, video-babiladon, kaj virtualaj mondoj kiel Dua Vivo, fakte oni pli komunikas ol leter-amikoj - rapide, malmultkoste, kaj sen respekto al landlimoj. Similas al ĉiutaga Universala Kongreso.

Unua Vivo

Dum la pasintaj 50 jaroj, la partopreno je ĉiuj sociaj kluboj en usono malaltiĝas. Antaŭe estis "Oddfellows", "Elks", ktp, sed preskaŭ ĉie la nombro de partoprenantoj malkreskiĝas. Robert Putnam verkis libron Bowling Alone (Kegloludante Sole) por priskribi la aferon.

Estas verŝajne multaj kaj diversaj kialoj. Unu verŝajne estas la televidilo: multaj homoj eble preferas ian ŝajnan socian partoprenon kun imagaj homoj malantaŭ vitra ekrano -- estas pli facila kaj sekura ol vere alfronti aliajn homojn.

Clifford Stoll verkis libron, Silicon Snake Oil, pri tio ke oni uzas siajn fortojn por plifortigi surretajn komunumojn anstataŭ la "vera" komunumo" de siaj najbaroj kaj samregionoj kaj prognozis fiaskon je la sociaj vivoj de niaj komunumoj. Robert Reich ankaŭ priskribis ion tian en libro The Work of Nations ke la nova tergloba ekonomio signifas ke viaj ekonomiaj kunuloj pli verŝajne estos aliloke nun ol pasinte, kiam la tuta komunumo laboris je unu aŭ du grandaj fabrikoj: jen alia forto kiu deŝiras nian socion.

Dirinte tion, mi trovas ke la junuloj ĉe mia urbo lastatempe pli interesiĝas (dum la pasintaj du jaroj, almenaŭ) pri la loka grupo. Post tiom da intereso pri la novaj eblecoj de la interreto, mi kredas ke homoj komencas eltrovi ke ĉirkaŭ ili estas tuta mondo kiun ili povas esplori. Mi plej ŝatis tiun ĉi esprimon de tiu sinteno: Akiru por vi Unuan Vivon!.

En ĉi tiu epoko, lokaj kluboj estas nur unu el pluraj forumoj kie Esperanto estas uzata. Pro transporto kaj interreto, internacia komunikado multe pliiĝas lastatempe en historio, kaj Esperanto
multe taŭgas tiel. Ĉe lokaj kluboj oni kutime parolas saman nacian lingvon jam, kaj ordinare pli bone ol Esperanto, do konversacio estas iel "malnatura" kaj limigita.

Plue mi povas imagi ke la junuloj ne multe interesiĝas pri pasigi tempon kun plenkreskulaĉoj. Tiel opiniis ankaŭ Kent Jones. Do gravas aranĝi aferojn kiuj rekte celas junulojn.

Lokaj kluboj ĝeneralaj tamen urĝe necesas, por ke komencantoj povas efike lerni la lingvon kaj pri la movado. Plue en lokaj kluboj kolektiĝas homforto, por aranĝi regionajn, landajn kaj internaciajn kunvenojn kaj por akcepti gastojn kaj orienti novulojn.

Interesa demando . . .

La ŝanĝoj, kiujn alportis la interreto, rilatas ne nur al la "juna generacio." Mi komunikadas kun geamikoj ĉiuaĝaj per Esperantlingvaj retpoŝtoj -- mi dubas, ĉu mi same ofte farus per leteroj aŭ poŝtkartoj.

Por mi, la interreto plenigas mankojn, kiujn lokaj grupoj ne povas alfronti. Loka grupo ne kunvenas ĉiutage; loka grupo laŭnome ne estas internacia; loka grupo ne ekzistas en ĉiu loko. Mi povas imagi Esperantistojn, kiuj bone lernas la lingvon kaj partoprenas Esperantujon neniam forlasante la komputilon -- pli ofte, ol mi deziras, mi estas unu el tiaj Esperantistoj.

Sed ĉio ĉi (almenaŭ, ne per la nunaj teknologiaj rimedoj) ne anstataŭigas vivajn kontaktojn. Estas ofte lokaj grupoj, kiuj informadas pri la lingvo kaj kuraĝigas komencantojn. Mi eklernis pri Esperanto en la Interreto, faris la perpoŝtan kurson per e-poŝto, sed ne estus daŭriganta la lernadon se mi ne vidus en la loka grupo vivantajn homojn interparolantajn per Esperanto.

Interese (kaj eble iom tikle) estas facile konstati, ke la nombro de Esperanto-komunikaĵoj estas multoble pli granda en la interreta epoko, ol antaŭe. Sed ne same kreskas la nombro de Esperantistoj, aŭ la atingoj de la Movado -- mi scivolas, ĉu niaj fortoj dividiĝas pro la multegaj eblecoj komunikadi, kaj ĉu niaj interrilatoj malprofundiĝas pro la facileco de komunikado. Kiam oni devis mane skribis leteron, leteroj estis preskaŭ artaĵoj; la plejmulto de miaj retpoŝtoj estas atencoj kontraŭ la skribata lingvo (angle kaj Esperante).

La geamikojn, kun kiuj mi plej ofte kaj profunde korespondas per la interreto, mi unue renkontis en malinterreta medio -- NASK, loka grupo, regiona aŭ landa kongreso, UK. Eble tiu lokigis min inter la malpli juna generacio, malgraŭ miaj dudek kvar jaroj.

YOUNG PEOPLE AND E-O CLUBS

Doesn't the younger generation need local E-o clubs?

I took part yesterday in an internet discussion about young Esperantists. One typist from Madrid declared that although there are more young people in the Esperanto movement, there are fewer who take part in local clubs. He didn't present evidence of that, so I can only believe his words. He believes that the World Wide Web contibutes to this matter. In the past, people had to join local clubs in order to participate in the Esperanto movement. But now, through technology the skillful younger generation is able to learn the language online and also meet many esperantists from all over the world over the internet. Doesn't the young geneation need the local clubs?

Local clubs are good, serious, insufficient

Possibly I'm too "raumist" now, but Esperantists on the net certainly entered the community during the past years, likely not to the final battle, but surely to the strengthening of the movement. Over time, when other world languages are failing and ["klenas"?] themselves to English, Esperanto lives and actually brings together their children. Local groups are now chiefly children of the internet movement, and not the opposite. One learns by means of the internet, one develops himself by means of the internet, one finds new friends on the internet, and one organizas local groups, often, by means of the internet. Without local groups, Esperanto will remain merely a hobby language, like Klingon, but local groups are not prevalent in our land and will never be without an active net-movement.

I don't understand how some people confuse themselves about the unity of the "first life" and the "second life" of the internet dweller. Isn't he who writes letters or speaks across the screen to a friend in another chatroom, truly communicating? With Skype, videochat and virtual worlds as the Second Life, truly one is communicating more than a letter penpal, faster, cheaper, and without consideration of land frontiers. It is like an everyday Universal Congress.

We now understand, that the internet isn't merely a book to find information, but that it is truly easier to reach a meetingplace than a local coffehouse.

First Life

In the last 50 years, membership in every social club in the United States has become less. Before it was "Odd Fellows," "Elks," etc. but almost everywhere the number of participants is dying. Robert Putnam wrote the book "Bowling Alone" to describe the matter.

Apparently there are many and diverse reasons. One apparently is television: many people possible prefer some kind of apparent participation with imaginary people behind the glass screen -- it is easier and more secure than truly facing some people.

Clifford Stoll wrote a book, "Silicon Snake Oil" about how one uses his strengths more to strengthen internet communication instead of the true community of their neighborhoods and same regions and portends the failure of the social lives in our communities. Robert Reich also wrote something of that in "The Work of Nations" that the new world economy means that our united economy partners will now be in other places more than in the past, when the whole community worked as one or two great factories: behold another force which tears our society apart.

Having said that, I find that young people in my city are lately more interested (than in the past year, at least) in the local group. After that amount of interest concerning the possibilities of the internet, I believe that people are beginning to find out that around them is the whole world they can explore. I was completely satisfied with that attitude. Get a First Life!

At this time, local clubs are only one of many forums where Esperanto is used. Because of transportation and the internet, international communication is greatly increasing in history, and Esperanto is greatly fitting for that. In local clubs one usually converses the same national language already, and usually better than Esperanto, therefore conversation is somewhat unnatural and limited.

I can further imagine that young people are not much interested in passing time with old geezers. Kent Jones also believed that. So it is serious to arrange matters which directly challenge young people.

Local clubs nevertheless generally are urgently necessary, so that beginners are able to effectively learn the language and about the movement. Furthermore, in local clubs human strength becomes collected to arrange regional, national, and international conventions and to accept guests and guide newcomers.

Interesting Question

Changes which the internet has brought about, not only refer to the "young generation." I communicate with friends of all ages through Esperanto email --- I doubt whether I would do the same very often through letters or postcards.

To me, the internet fills a lack which local groups are not able to confront. Local groups do not meet every day, local groups by their very name are not international, local groups do not exist everywhere. I can imagine Esperantists, who learn well the language and participate in Esperantoland never abandoning the computer --- more often than I desire, I am one of that kind of Esperantists.

But everything here (at least, not by present technological means) are not taking the place of live contacts. It is often local groups which inform about the language and encourage beginners. I began learning Esperanto on the internet, did the postal course by email, but would not have continued learning if I could not see in the local group living peple conversing together by means of Esperanto.

Every salesman classifies people in two groups: suspects and prospects.

A "suspect" merely indicates one who might become a buyer but until now has not indicated a preference to buy. On the other hand, it is possible that the "suspect" is not able to become a buyer because he has neither money nor desire nor tendency to possess the product.

The one classified as a "prospect" means he has enough money to buy the product, and some interest or desire in possessing it.

The skillful salesman establishes this by means of direct and indirect questioning.

How he exactly does this is not important to the Esperanto recruiter, but it is important that the salesmen thinks continously about the two groups and is always classifying everyone.

We ought to constantly think about who is a "prospect" to become an Esperantist. We are surrounded by favorable opportunities to recruit them.

Now, let's consider anew the two introverted boys I spoke of earlier. They are unlikely to become Esperantists because of a recruiter's talking (they are too uncommunicative.) Nevertheless they might become recruited through their activity (I assume) on the internet.

Therefore, whether one is a suspect or a prospect will depend on the method the recruiter selects.

Lastly, it is helpful to think about whether a person might be classified as a prospect or a suspect, and whether our recruiting method needs modifying.

The old-time door-to-door salesmen who were worth imitating also had personalities worth emulating. They always presented themselves as apparently being truly pleasant and obliging good-natured individuals.

They shook hands firmly and maintained eye-to-eye contact with people they spoke to.

Last week I was in the library and saw two adolescents sitting in a corner amusing themselves with a table game. I hoped to begin a small friendly conversation with them and try to put in a favorable word about Esperanto.

Both of them were the most introspective and introverted boys I ever met. Neither one nor the other looked at me, and gave me one-syllable replies in a monotone. I usually pride myself on my skill in striking up conversations with strangers of any age, but I completely failed to evoke a single word from this pair.

I feel sorry for intelligent people who lack personalities for extroverted interaction with others. I consider it a great pity.

Of course even lacking that, one may be successful in many undertakings, but never as an Esperanto recruiter.

One can achieve the necessary personality to successfully recruit.

For the purposes of this blog, I sought for examples of people who could, on a face-to-face basis, make a good first impression on people and influence them to act in the way he wanted.

I thought of the way some politicians can "work a room" as they say. That is, to walk into a roomful of strangers uninvited and move among them, greeting each individually and making such a good impression that he influences them to suport his candidacy with money and votes.

These certainly are ideal qualities for an Esperanto recruiter and it is very worthwhile to learn just how such skillful politicians do this.

However, I rejected the politican example because he has an organization behind him and because he is basically winning people to himself and secondarily to support the policies of his political party.

So I kept searching for the kind of person who can initiate a conversation uninvited with an unknown indivdual (not in a group) and quickly convince that person to take the action desired.

This one-on-one recruiting is specifically what this blog is about.

I have known religious people who could convert people by means of personal influence, but they have been rare, and I thought it best to avoid using such examples in a discussion of Esperanto recruiting because many Esperantists are rather religion-phobic and would be unwilling to accept that as a model they should follow even in a secular activity, such as promoting Esperanto.

Finally I determind the best example I could think of --- but alas --- very few of you would understand without my further explanation, because such men were in an occupation that went out of style more or less 50 years ago! And my observations pertain only to the United States. Sorry, its the best I can do.

A long time ago (in the U.S.) before the existence of chain stores and shopping malls (and internet shopping of course) many important products (vacuum cleaners, encyclopedias, insurance, family Bibles, sewing machines, kitchen ware, etc.) were sold by house-to-house salesmen.

Each salesman sold only one product, and he knocked on every door in every neighborhood in every city, town, and rural community. There are many jokes about "traveling salesmen" but the fact is they performed a valuable service. Their sales techniques later got a bad reputation due to unscrupulous people selling substandard wares and the scam artists who took advantage of customers.

In more modern times, for good reasons, homemakers would be afraid to open their door to unknown individuals going from house to house. Therefore the honest, hardworking old-time door-to-door salesman has been replaced by the telephone marketer. (And perhaps we can include the internet spammer.)

But in earlier years, the door-to-door salesman was a worthy example for an Esperanto recruiter to imitate. Why? Because he had developed a personality or persona by which he could establish instant rapport with perfect strangers long enough to present a skillful "sales pitch."

Also, he was disciplined and persistent in contacting people. He had discouraging days, but he never gave up.

I was privileged to know several such men. Several set a goal of visiting 50 homes a day. They put 50 pennies in their left pants pocket and after they had visited a house, they moved a penny to the right-hand pants pocket. They didn't quit work for the day until all the coins were in the right hand pocket, no matter how long it took. They often walked 10-15 miles a day, knocking on doors. They made a good living at it.

Can you imagine an Esperantist doing anything comparable to recruit others? Interesting conjecture, isn't it?

Next, I'll examine the personality traits of such model-examples.

WORTHY MODEL

Evidently all kinds of human activity requires a model or example to guide their work.

Strangely, according to Genesis, even God had models (in His mind, of course) when He created humans. "And God said: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." (Genesis 1:26, 27)

St. Paul admonished Timothy: "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of ["to" in Esperanto translation] the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." (1 Timothy 4:12)

A good model/example/picture (schematic) is important to make a good work. Everyone needs that kind of model, and usually we receive it from parents, grandparents, or similar adults. Our character and personality and presentability are formed by our models.

In the business world it is very helpful to an entry-level person to find a mentor who would help him by advice and example how to conduct himself in business matters.

When one takes steps to become a recruiter in the Esperanto cause, he needs to get his bearings by means of a mentor who serves the purpose, not merely with advice but also through example. In other words, the future recruiter needs a model who truly is worthy of following.

Sadly, that which he needs is also lacking. Do you know anyone who is worth following as a recruiter-model? What kind of person shows such qualities?

I searched my memories and finally decided that the model worthy of following was a kind of salesman who no longer exists, but according to my recollection and experience I will try to clearly describe that type of model. (Until then!)

At www.lernu.net you can click on "About Lernu" and then click "Statistics." There are two pages, and my remarks are based on the second page. It is very worthwhile to examine this information.

What can we learn from the Lernu statistics?

They may not accurately represent other Esperanto sources because naturally they reflect only people registered at Lernu. Furthermore, they obviously are limited to computer users. Therefore, a high economic level can be assumed for both the countries represented and their inhabitants who use Lernu instruction. Thus, poorer people are not represented.

In countries with greater population and highest number of computer users, a higher percentage of Esperanto students learned of Esperanto via a computer search on the internet. They are self-recruited.

The age groups of learners reflect the age groups who are already avid users of computers.

Anyone who lives in a poor country with few computers and few internet servers, or who is techophobic and unlikely to use computers even if availabe must learn of Esperanto from a non-computer source and must study in a non-computer way.

If we rely too heavily on the internet to inform, enlist, and educate people about Esperanto, we will discriminate against those in advanced countries who do not use computers, and against almost everyone in disadvantaged countries where computers and internet servers are too costly for most people.

What other lessons can you extract from the Lernu statistics?

Beginning in our own country, we must inform and recruit others by means of personal face-to-face contact.

I don't think most people are willing to do that, or even to learn how to do that.

Zamenhof proposed a philosophy he called (in Esperanto) "Homaranismo" (NOT "Humanism"). His small book on the subject is for sale at www.cafepress.com

Although everything that Zamenhof wrote on this subject is worth reading, the most useful single source is the pamphlet published in 1913. The text is divided into ten sections, each of which describes one fundamental principle of Homaranismo. From this text I have identified twelve main points and although this is a very brief summary, it may suffice to give you an idea of the complete doctrine.

The twelve main points of the Homaranismo manifesto

1. Treat the human race as one family.
2. Let this ideal guide all of your actions.
3. Do not judge any individual according to his racial origin but according to his behaviour and actions.
4. Any country does not belong exclusively to any one racial group but to all of its inhabitants equally.
5. Do not try to force your own language or religious faith on to other people.
6. The concept of humanity should be superior to that of nationality.
7. Define patriotism as service to a regional fraternal community. Never use it to justify hatred towards other people.
8. Language should be considered as a means and not an end in itself.
9. Use a neutral language to communicate with people whose native language is different from your own.
10. Let your own religion be a matter of personal choice and not something forced on you by your ethnic background.
11. In dealing with people with a different cultural background be governed by principles of common humanity and helpfulness.
12. In dealing with all members of the human race, try to promote sentiments which will unite and not divide.

The crucial point is that regarding "a neutral language," which is to say, Esperanto.

Esperanto is neutral regarding religion and politics, but it is not neutral regarding ethics. Its ethic is the internal idea.

La frazo "interna ideo" signifas la plej gravan celon de Esperanto. Tiu ideo estas la kerno, la koro, la plej profunda distingajxo en la spirito de la internacia lingvo.

Kutime ni aludas pri aliaj Esperantistoj kiel "samideanoj." Sed kiam mi legas la sinprezentajxojn (ekzemple en lernu.net) de Esperantistoj de malsama lingvopovo, mi trovas multajn malsamajxojn inter ili kaj mi. Vere, mi ne havas samajn ideojn pri plejpartaj aferoj!

Komuna nacialingvo ne signifas ke la parolantojn estas samideanoj, cxu ne? Do, komuna lingvapovo Esperante ne garantias la anojn kunhavas saman ideon pri io ajn.

Cxu vi nun estas konfuzata?

Antaux longa tempo, mi estis privilegita auxskulti surbenignon de Zamenhof mem kiam li salutis kongresanojn, kaj li diris "Samidealojn." Tio vere havas sencon. Enkore kasxita en Esperanto estas unu idealo, kiu estas la homareco inter malsamaj lingvanoj per komuna lingvo.

THE INTERNAL IDEA

The phrase "internal idea" means the most serious aim of Esperanto. That idea is the kernal, the heart, the profoundest distinguishing thing in the spirit of the international language.

We customarily refer to other Esperantists as "samideanoj" or fellow-thinkers, ones who think alike. But when I read the personal profiles (such as those in lernu.net) of Esperantists of varying language capability, I find many differences between them and me. In fact, I often do not have the same ideas about most matters!

A common national language doesn't mean the speakers think alike, does it? Well, common Esperanto language ability does not guarantee the members have the same idea about anything at all.

Are you now confused?

A long time ago I was priveleged to listen to a tape recording of Zamenhof himself when he greeted members at a congress, and he said "samidealojn," or "folks who hold the same ideal." This truly makes sense. Concealed in the heart of Esperanto is one ideal, that is the humanity among different language speakers by means of a common language.

One has a better right to call the internal idea the internal ideal.

It seems to me that many learners have not dedicated themselves to any ideal regarding linguistic study.

Their reasons for studying Esperanto are not similar to the reason Zamenhof thought about when he created it. He did not merely have an idea, but an ideal. What a difference!

Every student has his reason or aim for learning Esperanto --- for example an intellectual hobby, mind-game, opportunity for foreign travel, etc. No reason or aim in this group is the same as the reason or aim of Esperanto's creator.

We have many ideas, but Zamenhof had but one ideal.

Our aims for the most part are directed into ourselves. Our idea is to contribute to our own amuzement, either alone or with our friends.

To Zamenhof fun with a language was not important. He invented Esperanto to achieve a goal --- the ideal of international understanding by means of Esperanto.

It is said that the longer one is an Esperantist, the more likely one is to grasp the "internal idea" and be captured by it. I hope this is so.

UEA ON PROGRESS

William R. Harmon, the U.S. Chief Delegate from the Universala Esperanto-Asocio, has prepared the following letter for distribution. I think that it deserves publication here as well.

The Universal Esperanto Association (UEA) was founded in 1908 as an organization of individual Esperantists. Now UEA has members in 113 countries, and works not only to promote Esperanto, but to stimulate discussion of the world language problem and to call attention to the necessity of equality among languages. The By-Laws of UEA state the following four goals:

• to promote the use of the international language Esperanto

• to act for the solution of the language problem in international relations and to facilitate international communication

• to encourage all types of spiritual and material relations among people, irrespective of differences of nationality, race, sex, religion, politics, or language

• to nurture among its members a strong sense of solidarity, and to develop in them understanding and respect for other peoples.

In recent years, UEA has greatly increased its activities in areas where there historically has been little Esperanto activity. In Africa, for example, there are now classes or clubs in Benin, Burundi, Chad, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Congo DR, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Togoland and Zimbabwe. UEA’s Afrika Komisiono oversees and assists using funds from UEA’s Africa Fund.
Without UEA, this would not have happened.

In Asia there has been an explosion of activity recently. With the assistance of the Azia Komisiono under the presidency of Hori Yasuo of Japan, new organizations are now active in Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, Philippines, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Cambodia, South Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The Asia Commission recently underwrote a visit of several months in the Philippines by a young Nepali Esperantist, Bharat Ghimire, who not only initiated classes — some at university level — but also instigated the creation of a new Pilipina-English-Esperanto dictionary and new textbooks.
Without UEA, this would not have happened.

UEA administers the long-established worldwide Delegate Network with the help of Chief Delegates in 90 countries. There are currently 1900 delegates worldwide, with 91 in the United States. (And, as Chief Delegate, I am quite proud of this group.)

It is of course important to be active locally as an Esperantist — teach in or support local classes, attend local club meetings, participate in joint activities with educational organizations. But it is also important to support the promotion of Esperanto worldwide. Your membership in UEA will help. If you are a current member, please renew your membership through ELNA. An “aliĝilo” is enclosed in this mailing. If you are not a member of UEA now, please consider joining in this very important work by becoming a member at whatever level you can. The Membro-Abonanto (MA) level is recommended, as you receive the monthly magazine Esperanto which will keep you up to date on Esperanto activities worldwide, as well as the annual Jarlibro. Bedauxrinde mi ne re bonmemoras la nomo de tiu ulo.

REAL RECRUIT

When can we truly say we have recruited someone to the Esperanto movement? What would be the characteristics of a true recruit?

If we have persuaded a stranger to attend a club meeting, would that make him a recruit? If he attends 10 times would he be a recruit? Does attendance at a club for any amount of times ever qualify someone as a recruit?

If we persuade a stranger to enroll in an Esperanto course, does that make him a recruit? How many lessons must he study before he is a real recruit? Does he have to pass an examination? How many examinations?

If the student demonstrates a satisfactory degree of fluency in spoken Esperanto, does that mean he is a true recruit?

When is anyone really recruited to Esperanto?

Does it matter how we define a recruit? Well, only in the sense that we should be clear what we are talking about. It would be helpful if everyone who reads this blog had the same definitions in mind. No doubt I should have defined my terms clearly from the start. Let me do so now.

"To recruit" means not only to "enlist" but to prosyletize or convert to active participation in a cause.

Active participation? What is "active?" What is "participation?"

And the crucial question: What is the "cause" of Esperanto?

It is time we examined the "internal idea" of Esperanto.

CONNECTED? TO WHOM?

Our communities change. Over the years, people move away or move in, and the community spirit seems to become less. Priorities and activities appear to change. Social scientists have studied this in the U.S. and have found that the ways we interact with one another in groups have declined over the past 30 years or so.

P.T.A. membership is down 50%, participation in town and school board meetings is down 40%, men's clubs down 20%, women's clubs down more, youth particiption in extra-curricular activies has decined and church attendance has dropped.

We are far more likely to listed to a CD at home alone that join a local choral group, more likely to watch TV sports than join a softball team, more likely to be intrigued by the internet than volunteer with others at the local food bank.

There is a steady trend away from group involvement. Face-to-face participation in group involvement is important because it requires commitment. It encourages responsibility because group members must be accountable to one another in their lasting relationship. Group interaction makes for a connectedness in which people learn to cooperate and trust one another.

I sit in my favorite coffeehouse and look around at the dozen or so patrons who sit staring intently at their laptop computers. They are said to be "connected," but to whom? Certainly not to each other. Each person, immersed in cyberspace activity, was oblivious to the other customers in the coffeehouse. However, it made no difference to those patrons, for they also were "connected" to someone, somewhere, but not in the room.

Each of the dozen people in the room was connected to just one person somewhere, but not to each other. A dozen lonely people staring at screens, supposedly "connected" to a world "out there," but disconnected to the world around them.

Border Crimes

There was a lot of noise in the media recently during the election campaigns about border crimes. Politicians spoke long and hard about border crimes, what they are, and what to do about them. I could only listen to the campaigns for a while before I stopped listening or reading. The issue is perhaps hotter here in Texas than in some other states.

The issue comes at a time when most people are thinking about building fences, creating more barriers between countries. And the politicians are trying to solve a legal problem that touches society in many ways.

However, there are other “border crimes.”

These crimes are violations that we Esperanto speakers commit. Yes, I am accusing us. We are guilty. We have our own border problem in Esperantland.

Some people think about the crime of crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally. I’m thinking about the opposite problem, about not crossing the border when we should.

We have international borders available to us as Esperantists that we do not cross sufficiently often. In our conversations among ourselves, in our conversations with others, in our meetings, in our planning, and even in our thinking, we do not consider using Esperanto as it is intended.

Esperanto is an international language. We should use it internationally.

We should always try to give our club meetings a sense of “internationality.” We should report on international activities, international pen-pals, international news, international friendships, and any other kind of international actions that come to mind.

We should personally seek out international friendships and build the bridges that Esperanto enables us to build.

Imagine what a non-Esperanto speaker thinks when they observe us acting as we did before we came to know Esperanto, and Esperanto has had no effect on our lives. Imagine what they think of their visit to an Esperanto club, if there is no report on an international event, no literature by a writer in another country, or nobody mentioning a pen-pal across the sea. We might as well just speak English and be done with it.

If Esperanto has had an effect on us, it should be readily apparent. International connections should be at the forefront of our thinking and on the tips of our tongues. Our non-Esperanto friends and co-workers should be firmly aware that we are Esperanto speakers, and as such have international friends, connections, and activities. They should know that we can read Monato, Esperanto, Juna Amiko, or Literatura Foiro just like they read Time, People, or The Atlantic Monthly.

Give feet to the language.

Esperanto is sufficiently beneficial to sell itself, but we should show it in the best light for the best opportunities. It should be apparent, visible, paraded, put under the spotlight, and reported to the non-Esperanto speaking America.

We should cross the international borders, those barriers that divide countries, cultures, and classes. We can increase the world’s human inter-understanding for the betterment of mankind. And we can do that regardless of the level of our personal Esperanto abilities.

To do less is a border crime.

STRANGE CONTRAST

Correspondence with Esperantists in other lands stimulates one to study the geography and history of places where correspondents live in order to understand them better. Burundi is a small impoverished landlocked nation in the heart of Africa, originally Pygmy territory. You may remember a few years ago when the people suffered genocidal massacres in fights between tribes, the Hutu majority and the Tutsi minority. Hundreds of thousands were killed, and hundreds of thousands fled to adjoining countries. Recently, the U.S. accepted 10,000 Burundi refugees from camps in Rwanda. Many of them have lived in such camps so long they don't remember their lives in Burundi. Languages are Kirundi (Burundi), French, and some Swahili along the eastern border.

Burundi is the poorest nation in the world. Half of the 8,000,000 population is under the age of 14 and 56.8% of children under the age of 5 suffer from chronic malnutrition.

There is only one TV broadcast station in the country. The telephone system is primitive. There are perhaps only 25,000 internet users among the wealthiest people.

Burundi is about the size of the state of Maryland in the U.S. It has 17 provinces.

I hope you are familiar with the Esperanto pen-pal webpage (http://members.aol.com/enrike/elspeto.htm). The president of the Burundi National Association for Esperanto wrote: "Our Association has many clubs, from diverse regions of Burundi... Esperanto is spreading in Burundi. Now there is an Esperanto club in almost every province of Burundi. Our students need penpals and textbooks." Correspondence must be by the postal system because only the rich have internet access.

Did you get this? "Now there is an Esperanto club in almost every province of Burundi." Can you explain how this is possible among poorest people in the world without computers?

Compare it with the situation in the U.S., the wealthiest country in the world, where most homes have internet access, yet there are only 51 Esperanto clubs in 31 states, and they are very small and mostly stay that way.

Can you explain this disparity?

Clearly, in Burundi every poor and lowly Esperantist is enthusiastically recruiting others through personal effort.

WHY SO MANY COMPUTER GUYS?

I asked why she thought they predominated in U.S. Esperanto clubs)

They seem to be interested in esoteric stuff in general, and I think Esperanto fits in with that. How many computery people do you know who like Japanese anime, or who juggle (or any other unusual hobby)? Also, I think its logical structure may fit in with their interest in computer programming and such things. I think Esperanto is not seen as "cool" and not seen as a social thing to do, which may draw uncool and not-so-social people to it.

Our community is so spread out that the only people likely to encounter Esperanto are the ones who spend a lot of time on the computer. In Europe, speakers are more concentrated, there are more events
that people can attend without travelling hours and hours and hours, and they can use the reasonably low-cost train system to get there. These factors combine to make it easier to have social events (thus it is seen as a social thing and not just for people who live in front of a computer) and young people are more able to attend.

In the US, we don't have a high enough density of speakers to have events in very many places, and the number of young people able to go to events tends to be small because they simply don't have the money to fly to whatever event. And our train network is sparse and expensive, so that's no help, so in most cases their only choice is an insanely long bus ride.

WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?

In my experience at North American Esperanto gatherings, men outnumber women, but a lot. I think in the U.S. Eo tends to attract a geeky computery sort of guy. At least the ones that show up at the various Eo gatherings seem to be disproportionately computer programmers, mathemeticians, and scientists. I'm not sure why women don't learn but almost all of my North American "esperanto friends" are male.

In Western Europe it's a little more equal, but I've only attended a couple events there and I wasn't exactly counting up males vs females, but I remember that it wasn't so overwhelmingly male like it tends to be here (at least on the U.S. East Coast.)

In Eastern Europe --- Russia, Ukraine, etc. --- women outnumber men. I am not sure why this is but it has been my experience that people in different cultures decide to learn Esperanto for widely different reasons. My friend did an informal poll to this effect --- most Americans said they were learning because they are interested in learning languages or interested in meeting people from other countries. Many Brazilians mentioned religious or spiritual reasons in addtion to the international communication. Many Europeans learn it to take part in the fun events (and other reasons too, I'm sure.)

In any case, if you want to use Eo to meet women, start to frequent Russian Eo groups!

THE CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS OF ESPERANTOLAND

1. The characteristics of Esperanto have changed over the generations since the days of Zamenhof until today. This is to be expected, since the demographics of every other movement has also changed.

2. The imperceptible changes of decades add up in a century. How does understanding these changes help us to comprehend the significance of those in our present day?

3. In Zamenhof's days (prior to WW I) recruits to Esperanto were university students and professional people who were interested in the pragmatic vision of a usable common language to overcome the barrier of national languages. The "internal idea" was implicit in the recuiting. As the movement appeared well underway, preparations in Europe for WW I increased the old suspicions among nations and borders were closed, a major setback for Esperanto.

4. The period between WW I and WW II saw a demographic change in the Esperanto movement, as the labor union movements spread and grew in power, as did socialism and communism in political theory and philosophy. Most Esperantists of that period were laborers and artisans in Europe's labor unions. World peace and brotherhood were promised by the prevailing political theories of socialism and communism, and Esperantists tended to think that Esperanto should serve those political aims.

5. Brotherhood was elusive and illusory because those philosophies emphasized and exploited class distinctions and class conflicts. Esperantists were no less naive than the politicized public.

6. After WW II, the demographics of the whole world changed. In the U.S., legislation caused university enrollment to soar and and the educational level of society increased. Technologies of all kinds were created and constantly improved.

7. Television shrunk the world and brought pictures of faraway places into homes. Everyone everywhere became more cosmopolitan and better educated. The United Nations created a new internationalism and lanugage barriers became again apparent.

8. Esperanto organizations in general revived and renewed contact with those in other countries, including those were enemies in the war.

9. In the past 50 years, technologies have transformed the world, and changed the demographics of Esperantoland. Esperantists in general now tend to be enthusiastic users of personal computers and the internet. This means the median age of Esperantists probably has become younger than in previous decades. These youthful Esperantists strive to make their Esperanto clubs and the Esperanto movement more attractive to other young people by devising ways to use Esperanto as a source of amusement via word-games, jazz, contemporary and rock music, and videos in Esperanto.

10. Many Esperantists now are not only users of computers but are professional or semi-professional programmers and technicians. They live in the "virtual reality" of the cyberworld as much as, if not more, than in the ordinary reality of non-computer people. They like to deconstruct and re-engineer things whether or not anyone else wants the changes.

11. What do all these observations have to do with the subject of Esperanto recruitment? Simply that if people ever do recruit others to the movement, those recruits will be like themselves, with the same temperaments and interests. The implications of these trends await a more profound analysis than I am capable of.

12. But two trends are clear: (1) A growing emphasis on Esperanto as a subject for intellectual analysis and continual changes, many of which will be ill-advised. (2) a desire to adapt a public relations model to better propagate Esperanto and an emphasis on giving it an entertainment value via technologically advanced media.

13. However, we should remember that Zamenhof did not create Esperanto to be like a fascinating archeological artifact to be studied as an end in itself. He intended people to use Esperanto as a means to an end -- not intellectual stimulation or amusement but simply so that people could and would talk to each other across barriers of national languages.

Isolated Esperantists often wish to communicate with other Esperantists to practice speaking.

I'm wandering from the usual theme of the "Recruiting Place" to call attention to the possibility of free global telephone contact by means of your computer.

I've noticed the personal profiles of registered users at Lernu.com and other examples sometimes mention the program "Skype" for that purpose. But Skype users need a broadband connection to the internet. I don't have that, so I'm unable to use the Skype internet phone.

I just discovered a system to make free telephone calls globally with your regular telephone (you don't need a headset), with nothing to download, with either broadband or dial-up connection to the internet.

In the last case, ask me about a maneuver to achieve results with a dial-up connection. (If you have dial-up, when someone telephones you, he'd normally get a busy signal.)

It isn't necessary for the friend you are phoning to be connected to the internet.

Naturally, you would arrange your telephone calls according to Greenwich Mean Time, etc.

PHILOSOPHICAL BASIS FOR CONTINUING IN ESPERANTO

There are several reasons, perhaps many, to learn and use Esperanto. Nevertheless, a different reason supports our desire to propagate Esperanto. (It has to do with the "internal idea," and I'll deal with that at a later time.)

We easily become discouraged in our recruitment efforts because we cannot guarantee the results.

To combat such discouragement, we need a stronger motivation than that which is sufficient merely for learning.

The lack of recruiting results discourages us, and we always will have more failure than success. That is natural.

Therefore, it is a serious mistake to fear failure.

Nevertheless, what is the antidote against discouragement?

Here is the same idea expressed in different words:

One ought to work to achieve every worthy goal.

If something is worth doing, it ought to be done.

Don't be concerned over results, only for your efforts. During this life, no one can assure the end result of any action whatever.

Only the present work is worthwhile. Think about that for the present and leave the future in God's hands.

Kial oni devus lerni Esperanton?

"Kial oni devus lerni Esperanton?" Kompreneble, la respondo ne estas la sama por ĉiu persono. Plue estas diversaj specoj de kialoj. Mi volas diskuti kun vi kelkajn el ili en tri kategorioj. Tiuj tri specoj de kialoj estas (1) la praktikaj kialoj, (2) la mens-pligrandigaj kialoj, kaj (3) la moralaj kialoj.
La unua praktika kialo, kiun mi volas mencii, estas por amuzi vin. Per Esperanto vi povas renkonti kaj konatiĝi kun multaj bonkoraj, interesaj, kleraj, lertaj, talentaj personoj, vojaĝi al diversaj landoj tra la tuta mondo, ĝui vere internaciajn festojn, kaj aŭskulti muzikon kaj danci dancojn de multaj kulturoj. La tuta planedo povas iĝi via ludejo.
La dua praktika kialo estas por havi konatajn (kaj eĉ ĝis nun nekonatajn) samideanajn amikojn, kiuj salutos kaj bonvenigos vin ie ajn en la mondo. Kelkfoje ili eĉ invitos vin manĝi kaj resti en siaj domoj en foraj landoj. Kiel Esperantistoj ofte diras, "Se vi volus gajni monon, studu la anglan ; sed se vi volus havi amikojn, lernu Esperanton." Sendube estas vera aforismo, ke Esperantistoj havas bonajn amikojn ĉie. Preter tio, ne forgesu, ke kelkfoje Esperantistoj eĉ trovas edzon aŭ edzinon, ĉar ili estas parto de la Esperanta komunumo.
La tria praktika kialo lerni Esperanton, speciale por infanoj en anglaparolantaj kaj Aziaj landoj, estas, ke Esperanto provizas bonan manieron komenci la studon de alia lingvo krom la denaska lingvo. Diversaj eksperimentoj montras, ke lernantoj povas pli rapide lerni la laŭregulan lingvon Esperanton ol Eŭropajn naciajn lingvojn kiel la anglan kaj la francan. Plue oni povas observi, ke lernantoj, kiuj unue studas Esperanton anstataŭ pli malfacilajn lingvojn, poste pli avide lernas aliajn lingvojn. Ili sentas, ke ili havas la kapablon fari tion. Male, la studado de pli malfacilaj lingvoj kiel la latina kaj la angla ofte malkuraĝigas la lernantojn provi lerni aliajn lingvojn.
Nun mi turniĝu al la dua speco de kialo studi Esperanton, nome, por pligrandigi vian menson per pli bona kompreno de la mondo. Kiel bone diras Kanada Esperantisto Doktoro Stevens Norvell el Nov-Skotio, Esperanto estas "fenestro al la mondo." Kiam oni kapablas legi kaj aŭdi nian lingvon, oni povas informiĝi pri aliaj landoj, aliaj kulturoj, kaj aliaj vidpunktoj per libroj, jurnaloj, revuoj, sonbendoj, vidbendoj, radiaj kaj televidaj elsendoj, retejoj, kaj ret-mesaĝoj. Oni povas informiĝi el neŭtrala vidpunkto pri kio okazas tra la tuta mondo.
Plue ne estas nur specifaj informoj, kiujn vi povas ekscii. Oni gajnas ankaŭ pli bonan mondkoncepton ĝenerale. Oni ne plu estos tiel ligita per lingvo al malgranda parto de la Tero kaj la vidpunktoj de tiu lingva aŭ kultura komunumo. Oni konatiĝas kun la tuta homa komunumo.
La tria speco de kialo lerni Esperanton estas por mi la plej grava. Ĝi estas la morala kialo, kaj ĝi havas du flankojn.
Unue, oni povas havi rilaton kun aliaj personoj tra la tuta mondo sur bazo de egaleco kaj justeco ĉar oni uzas tutteran neŭtralan lingvon anstataŭ la propran nacian lingvon. Vi ne postulos ke aliuloj uzu vian lingvon, kaj ili ne postulos, ke vi uzu ilian lingvon. Sekve ekzistas sento de egaleco kaj justeco inter vi kaj aliuloj.
La dua aspekto de la morala speco de kialo lerni Esperanton estas la fakto, ke, kiel Esperantisto, oni helpas krei evoluantan harmonian tutmondan komunumon. Per Esperanto oni iĝas parto de tre grava historia movado, kiu antaŭenigas la solidarecon inter ĉiuj homoj. Esperanto ne estas nur lingvo. Ni Esperantistoj konstituas tute novan specon de universala komunumo bazita sur la uzo de nia tutmonda lingvo. Ni nun kune moviĝas preter la inter-naciismo de la dudeka jarcento al la tutmondismo de la dudek-unua jarcento. Tamen ni samtempe helpas konservi la multajn naciajn lingvojn en la diversaj mondpartoj ; tiel ni konservas la lingvan diversecon.
Sendube estas aliaj kialoj lerni Esperanton, kiujn mi ne menciis. La situacioj kaj motivoj de homoj estas tre diversaj. Tamen mi esperas, ke la ideoj, kiujn mi presentis ĉi tie, helpos vin persvadi aliulojn, ke ili devus lerni Esperanton kaj aliĝi al nia evoluanta tutmonda komunumo.

Why should we learn Esperanto?

"Why should we learn Esperanto?" Of course, the answer is not the same for each person. Furthermore, there are different kinds of reasons. I want to discuss these various reasons under three headings. The three kinds of reasons are
1. the practical reasons,
2. the reasons related to expanding one’s mind, and
3. the moral reasons.
The first practical reason which I want to mention is to enjoy yourself. By means of Esperanto you can meet and become acquainted with many good-hearted, interesting, educated, clever, talented persons. You can travel to various countries throughout the world. You can participate in truly international parties. You can hear music and join in dancing the dances of many cultures. The whole planet can become your playground.
The second practical reason is to have like-minded friends (some of whom you have not even previously met) who will greet you and welcome you anywhere in the world. Sometimes they will even invite you to eat with them and stay in their homes in far-off lands. As Esperantists often say, "If you want to gain money, study English; but if you want to have friends, learn Esperanto." Undoubtedly it is a true saying that Esperantists have good friends everywhere. Beyond that, don’t forget that sometimes Esperantists even find a husband or a wife as a result of belonging to the Esperanto community.
The third practical reason for learning Esperanto, especially for children in English-speaking and Asian lands, is that Esperanto provides a good way of beginning the study of a language other than your native tongue. Various experiments show that pupils learn the rule-guided language Esperanto more rapidly than European national languages such as English and French. Furthermore, one can observe that pupils who first study Esperanto instead of more difficult languages are afterwards more eager to learn still other languages. They feel confident that they have the capability to do that. On the contrary, the study of more difficult languages like Latin and English often discourages pupils from trying to learn other languages.
Let me turn now to the second kind of reason for studying Esperanto, namely, to expand your mind in order to have a better understanding of the world. As Canadian Esperantist Dr. Stevens Norvell of Nova Scotia rightly notes, Esperanto is "a window to the world." When you are able to read and hear Esperanto, you can use it to become informed about other countries, other cultures, and other viewpoints through books, newspapers, magazines, sound-tapes, videotapes, radio and television broadcasts, web-sites, and web-messages. You can acquire information from a neutral point of view about what is happening throughout the whole world.
Furthermore, it is not only specific information which you can acquire. You will also gain a better general understanding of the world. You will no longer be so tied by language to one small region of the Earth and the viewpoint of that language or cultural community. You can become acquainted with the whole human community.
The third kind of reason to learn Esperanto is for me personally the most important. It is the moral reason, and it has two sides.
First, you can have a relationship with other persons throughout the world on the basis of equality and justice because you are using the world-wide neutral language Esperanto instead of your own national language. You will not require others to use your language, and they will not require you to use their language. Consequently there exists a feeling of equality and justice between you and others.
The second aspect of the moral kind of reason for learning Esperanto is the fact that, as an Esperantist, you are helping to create an evolving harmonious global community. Through Esperanto you become part of an important historical movement which promotes a sense of solidarity among all humans. Esperanto is not only a language. We Esperantists constitute a totally new kind of universal community based on the use of our global language. We together are now moving beyond the inter-nationalism of the twentieth century to the globalism of the twenty-first century. Nevertheless, at the same time we are helping to conserve the many national languages in the various parts of the world, thus preserving linguistic diversity.
Undoubtedly there are other reasons for learning Esperanto which I have not mentioned. The situations and motives of humans are very diverse. Neverthe-less I hope that the ideas which I have presented here will help you to persuade others that they should learn Esperanto and become members of our evolving global community.

Li estis konsiderata tiel "savisto de animoj." En la komenco de lia prediklaboro, li revenis hejmen post kunveno kie predikis. Amiko demandis al li, "Kiom da animoj estis savigxata cxi tiu nokte?"

La fama predikisto respondis: "Du kaj unu duona."

La amiko diris, "Du plenagxuloj kaj unu infano?"

Li respondis emfaze, "Ne, ne. Du infanoj kaj un plenagxulo. Komprenu -- la infanojn mi konsideras tiel havas ilian tutvivojn por servi Dion, sed la plenagxulo havas nur malgrandan parton restanta de lia vivo por servi Dion!"

Interesa koncepto, cxu ne?

Unu infano kiu estas varbata (al Esperanto, en nia kazo) pli valoras ol plenagxulo, cxar infano povas studi, lerni, spertigxi por multa da dekjaroj dum la estoneco.

WHAT COULD HALF-AN-ESPERANTIST MEAN?

Sometimes ideas worth writing about here escape me. This week I was thinking of a simple theme based on a brief account of a famous preacher (D.L. Moody) in the 19th century.

He was considered to be a "saver of souls." At the beginning of his ministry, he came home from a meeting where he had preached. A friend asked him, "How many souls were saved tonight?"

The famous preacher answered: "Two and one-half."

The friend said, "Two adults and one child?"

He answered emphatically, "No, no. Two children and one adult. Understand, I consider the children have their complete lives to serve God, but the grown-up has only a small part left of his life to serve God!"

An interesting way to look at it, isn't it?

A child recruited (to Esperanto, in our case) is worth more because the child can study, learn and become expert for many future decades.

LAWS OF INERTIA

Two laws control the physical world.

1) An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.

2) An object in motion continues in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.

We can metaphorically adapt them also to everyday affairs. Here are my interpretations to apply them in this manner to daily use.

1) Nothing in your life will change unless you push it. (In other words, you need to exert yourself.)

2) When something gets moving, it creates friction. (In other words, others many resist your efforts.)

Too often we wait for others to change our world, and that will never happen. Whatever we do not do never will be done.

What do you think needs changing in your life? In your personal life? In your interrelations with others? In your Esperanto club?

You yourself ought to and are able make changes, and not wait for help until you begin "pushing" the matter.

Going back to the aforementioned example, who will resist your efforts? Truly, regarding Esperanto recruiting activities, no one will resist you.

Let us begin "pushing" today and in that manner move the movement we so much love.

Cxu ne estas rimarkinda ke Petro cxefdiscxiplo kaj forta predikanto en la etendo de Kristanismo (lia prediko en Tago de Pentekosto konvertis 3,000) -- ke li havas neniun mono!

Cxu vi ecx ne havas monon por acxeti Esperanta propagandon por helpi vian varbantojn?

HOW MUCH DOES A RECRUIT COST?

Is it expensive to recruit? Doubtless one can spend large sums of money for whatever purpose, and many club leaders presume the club treasury should contain a treasure to make an Esperantist out of a stranger.

This false premise causes a person to believe the duty or recuiting belongs to the group (the club) which has suficient money, and the indidivual is able to do nothing.

There is another helpful lesson from the Bible, Acts 3:1-7.

"Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer.... And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple... to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength."

Isn't it remarkable that Peter, chief disciple and mighty preacher in the spread of Christianity (his sermon on the Day of Pentecost converted 3,000 people) -- had no money!

"Silver and gold have I none..."

You don't have money to even buy Esperanto promotional materials to help in your recruitment?

Neither Peter or other disciples had any -- nevertheless consider the rest of the verse: "But what I have, that I give you."

I mean that instead of concentrating on our lack, on the other hand we emphasize what we have.

And what does the poor person have? What do we have when we have no money? We still have a serious capability to recruit. What?

We have the ability to make friends.

We have the ability to talk.

Those are sufficient for success!

KIO MOVAS EN LA MOVADO?

Ni ofte parolas pri la Esperantamovado, ekzemple la mondskala Esperanto movado, aux la nacia Esperanto Movado, ktp. Estas bonsenca demandi, Pri kio konsitas la "movado?" Alivorte, cxu io movas fakte?

Sxajnas al mi ke la kvanto de Esperantistoj pli grandigxis estinte ol nuntempe. Mi parolis kun veteranoj militaraj Usonaj kiuj estis taskitaj en Exuropo dum la Dua Mondmilito, kaj ili diris al mi ke vidis afisxojn ke Esperanto estis parolata tie en cxiuj trajnaj kaj busaj stacioj tra cxiu ne-Nazio lando.

Plue, mi opinias ke membreco en asocioj Esperantaj aux stagnis aux reduktigxis dum jardekoj, kvankam mi ne havas statistikojn pri tutaj landoj, tamen mi havas tiujn pri la Universala Esperanto Asocio kaj Usonaj organizoj.

Nekredeblas ke Usono havas tiel malpli UEA delegitoj, kaj same pri membroj ordinaraj de UEA. Egalas la membreco de la Esperanto Ligo de Nordameriko (ELNA) cxiu jaro malkreskas. Evidente multaj membroj ne renovigas membreco, kaj malpli novuloj kunigxis anstataxue. (Oni demandus "Kial?")

En 1937, Stalinistoj ekzekutis 2000 Esperantistojn kaj forsendis multegajn al la Gulago. Pripensu! Neniam estas tiom konataj Esperantistoj en Usono! Do, ekzistas multajn Esperantistojn en la pasinta ol hodiaux.

Cxu kia senco movas la Esperantamovado? Kie estas la moveco? Kiel gxi movas?

Jes, ekzistas movon, sed gxi ne estas difinita ne limigita per la nacionaj aux internaciaj organizoj Esperantaj.

La movado okazas en cibernatikaspacio, la mondo interreta. Nekalkulebla kvanto de personoj nefiligxitaj lernas kaj uzas Esperanton per retposxto, forumoj, mesagxado, ktp.

"Lernu," multelingva interreta fonto por komencanta al supera Esperantastudantoj (http://www.lernu.net) kavas pli ol 25.000 registrantoj. Tio vere montras kie la movo estas. La Esperantamovado kreskas je la ekspanciaj randoj de la interretaj studlokoj --- ne je nacilandaj kluboj.

Ciberstudentaoj estas memvarbataj. Neniu Esperantisto kontaktis ilin -- kontrauxe ili kontaktis Esperantistojn kauze ilia memvolo.

Nun, supozu cxiu Esperantisto varbos unu plu cxijaro. La 25.000 de "Lernu" kreskus gixis 50.000 dum la unua jaro, 100.000 sekvanta jaro, tiam 200.000, ktp.

Imagu sama aktiveco en cxiu klubo.

Ni asertas ke 2 miliono Esperantaparolantoj mondskala ekzistas. Se cxiu replikus sin, poste unu jaro estus 4 miliono, ktp.

Vi komprenas tien mi gvidas, cxu ne? Se cxiu varbigos nur unu persono jare, tio ne sxajnas tro malfacila, cxu?

Tiam vere movegus nia movado!

WHAT MOVES IN THE MOVEMENT?

We often speak of the Esperanto Movement as in references to the International Esperanto Movement, or a National Esperanto Movement, etc.

It is fair to ask What does the "movement" consist of? Is anything in fact "moving?"

I think the number of Esperantists used to be greater than it is now. I've talked with American military veterans who were stationed in Europe in WWII, and they tell me that they saw signs posted that Esperanto was spoken in railway and bus stations in every non-Nazi country.

Furthermore, I think membership in Esperanto Associations has been stagnant or diminishing for decades. Although I don't have the figures for individual countries, I do know two significant indicators, namely the UEA and the USA (ELNA) organizations.

It's incredible that the USA has so few UEA delegates, but the latest figures show a decline, as do the number of people in the USA who are ordinary members of the UEA.

Also, the number of people who ae members of the USA Esperanto Association (ELNA) declines each year. Clearly, many do not renew their memberships and few new ones are joining to replace them.

In 1937, Stalinists executed 2000 Esperantists and sent many more to the Gulag. Think of it -- there have never been that many known Esperantists in the USA! There must have been many more Esperantiss in the past than there are now. At least in the USA.

In what sense is the Esperanto Movement moving? Where is the motion? How is it moving?

Yes, there is movement, but it isn't limited to, nor is it defined by, the national or international Esperanto organizations.

The movement is occuring in cyberspace, the world of the Internet. Uncounted numbers of unaffiliated people are learning Esperanto and using it in emails, forums, messaging, etc.

Lernu, a multilingual online source of Esperanto study from beginner to advanced (http://www.lernu.net) has over 25000 students registered. This indeed shows where the movement is in the Esperanto Movement. The Esperanto Movement is growing at the expanding edges of the cyberspace training sites, not at the limits of the membership rolls of the national Esperanto societies and their affiliated clubs.

These cyber-students were self-recruited. No Esperantist contacted them --- they contacted the Esperantists on their own initiative.

Now suppose that each Esperantist recruited one more each year. The 25,000 enrolled in Lernu would grow to 50,000 in one year, 100,000 the next year, 200,000 in the third year, etc.

Suppose each member in a national Esperanto organization recruited one more member each year. Imagine the same for every member in every club or group.

We claim there are 2 million Esperanto speakers in the world. If every Esperantist duplicated himself each year, in one year there would be 4 million, the next year 8 million, etc.

You see where I'm trying to lead, don't you?

Each person winning just one new person a year doesn't sound too formidable a task, does it?

Then the Esperanto Movment would truly move!

THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER

The most instructive parable which illustrates the work, successful and unsuccessful, of the recruiter is found in the Holy Bible. Obviously I don't intend to present a religious lesson. If I knew of better examples from Shakespeare or some other secular source, I would be citing them.

Here is the parable from chapter 9 of St. Luke:

"A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.

"And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.

"And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.

"And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold....

"And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?

"And he said.... Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

"Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts. lest they should believe and be saved.

"They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

"And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

"But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience."

Notice that although the seed was good and the sower labored faithfully, the results did not meet with the same success.

The failures were due to the quality of the ground/hearers. This is important. When the Esperanto recruiter sincerely tries to make other people into Esperantists, many will completely ignore him or her, and others will put forth the lamest excuses imaginable, etc.

1. Those who hear but later ignore the information. They allow other influences to erase the invitation.

2. Those who at first react enthusiastically, but soon give up because they are shallow people.

3. Those who are merely too occupied with many matters, some perhaps also good. Esperanto study competes against modern calls to join health clubs, save the whales, volunteer to help the poor and sick, and so forth.

4. Those who sufficiently value Esperanto so that they faithfully continue study in spite of competing influences.

We should never become discouraged due to the failures of other people.

The lack of complete success is to be expected and is inevitable. But the duty of the sowers and/or recruiters is to continue their efforts all the same.

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF RECRUITING?

Esperantists excel in some things such as self-congratulations, taking group photographs, defending Esperanto against critics, and more or less publicizing their clubs. Also they busy themselves by issuing "manifestos" and signing petitions which they wrote themselves.

They also like to "reinvent the wheel" as the saying goes. In other words, they repair things that aren't broken. Mainly the computer programmers delight in trying to improve Esperanto study aids, even when they already work well. Human nature likes to change things which often don't need changing. Everyone putters.

Therefore Esperantists (as a group) well know how to defend and publicize Esperanto, and even to teach it well. But who is in charge of recruitment? Notice how the majority of national Esperanto societies don't grow much from year to year.

It is difficult enough to maintain the membership year after year, in spite of good work defending, publicizing, and teaching. It is self-evident that the only problem is they are not emphasizing the enlistment of new members which is carried out through individual effort.

BRIDGES AND BARRIERS

Every time we present ourselves to others, at the same time we are presenting the other person either a bridge or a barrier. As we appear, so we emotionally and intellectually impress others.

Some people attract us while others repel us, don't they? The reverse is also true. We attract and repel others by our personality, appearance, and our manner of speech.

Suppose someone wrote for pen-pals: "I'm an atheist and anarchist. I like body piercing and big tattoos. I'm a no-egg-or-milk vegan and I'm gay. I wish to correspond. Write me."

Yeah, maybe when it snows in hell.

Clearly understand me. This request for correspondence is suitable when one searches for pen-pals. But it is completely forbidden in the self-presentation of the Esperanto recruiter, because it contains too many barriers and simultaneously lacks bridges. Therefore it would repel the majority of the population.

Our goal is to attract everyone.

PONTOJ KAJ BARIERO

KIOM DA PERSONOJ KONSTITUAS IDEALAN GRUPON?

Esperantaj vebpagxaroj kaj logoj mencias "lokaj grupon" kaj "kluboj." Mi ne scias kiel diferencigas inter ilin, sed mi havas opiniojn pri la ideala grandeco por lernanta grupo.

La principo por direkti grandan grupon estas distinata kompare malgrandan grupon. Ekzistas kvar fundamentajn gradojn de grupoj, sed nur la unua du koncernas nin.

1. Vizagxo al vizagxa grupo. La efikeco redukigxas kiam estas pli ol sep membroj.

HOW MANY PEOPLE IN AN IDEAL GROUP?

Esperanto webpages and blogs speak of "local groups" and "clubs." I don't know what the difference is but I have an opinion on the ideal size for a group of learners.

The principles of managing a large group differ from a small group. There are four basic sizes for groups (but only the first two are relevant to us.)

1. Face-to-face group. Effectiveness diminishes if there ae more than seven members.

2. A group of 8 to 17 members can benefit from the advantages of a smaller group, providing the members are well-acquainted with each other and see each other at least once or twice a week.

This is the common size for the basic unit in a military organization. The value of this size is illustrated by the nine players on a baseball team, the eleven players on a USA football team, or the basketball squad that usually includes from 9 t 12 players.

It is also the size of a typical chuch choir, women's circle, high school youth group, or active members in a book study group.

Most people can keep track of only 15 or 16 people in our head, recall their names without hesitation, and relate to comfortably.

The disadvantage of a group this large is that it is possible for someone to be absent without being noticed, and it is difficult for everyone to be able to have an active role in discussion. (If each person speaks for only two minutes at a time, a participant can speak only four times in a two-hour meeting with 15 participants.)

3. 35 to 40 participants is as large as a group can be with the relationship of the members as the basic organizing principle.

4. More than 35 to 40 participants require large group management methods.

In my opinion, too many small Esperanto groups try too soon to use methods suitable only for larger groups. There is no need for groups less than 35 members to make a constitution and by-laws; that will ruin what effectiveness they have. On the other hand, a large group cannot use small group methods.

Small group management techniques to strengthen cohesion include use of the circle as the basic seating arrangement, asking participants to take a minute to introduce themsleves to the entire group, and encouraging everyone to relate to every other member.

It is obvious that if there are five members plus a leader, if the meeting lasts one hour, every person can only speak for a total of 10 minutes each.

I believe if a group exceeds 4 members, it should split into two groups, etc.

I myself recruit and mentor only individuals, but I've dealt here with group dynamics for the benefit of those of you who will work in that manner.

MUST THE RECRUITER SPEAK ESPERANTO PERFECTLY?

I was greatly surprised to learn that many successful coaches never played the sports they coached. A famous swimming coach did not even know how to swim! That isn't serious, because they have a deep understanding of the sport and are able to teach it well.

The Olympic gymnastic coach Bela Karoli has an unusual ability to instruct, urge, and motivate the tiny girls who win an incredible number of gold medals. But Karoli himself isn't able even to chin himself!

The successful auto salesman doesn't understand auto mechanics as well as a garage mechanic.

Still the fictitious idea exists that only Esperantists with a high level of expertise have a right to enlist converts into the Esperanto movement.

Think about it! Do the most experienced Esperantists win over the greatest number of people to Esperanto? The question is somewhat embarrassin; the answer will be more embarrassing.

It is necessary only that one have more knowledge of aspirants than the one being won over.

CXU VARBANTOJ DEVAS PAROLI ESPERANTON PERFECTAN?

WHY WE ARE HERE

There is an old joke about the first thing that happens when two isolated Esperantists find each other -- they form a club! When the meet a third Esperantist, they start a newsletter!

There was a lot of truth to that old joke before computers. Today a lot of Esperantists still hope to meet others, but now each of them probably has a web page and soon they start a blog.

As stated in the Preamble above, this is an English-Esperanto source to help Esperantists recruit others to study and use Esperanto, the international language that works, and to gather ideas on how to do this. Emphasis is on person-to-person recruitment, rather than on the activities of a local Esperanto group.

I will be presenting my opinions and ideas and I hope each of you will do the same. I hope you'll bookmark this place and visit often. And whenever you visit, please leave a comment. Together we can make progress. One person's idea will stimulate another's and on it goes.

It isn't required that you translate your comments into Esperanto. If you don't speak English and comment in Esperanto, neither is is required for you to translate that into English.

I don't guarantee perfection in my Esperanto, and for that matter, not in my English either!
